The Appropriate Flowers for Specific Occasions
When it comes to sending flowers to someone, choosing
the most beautiful, affordable, and appropriate bouquet
can be difficult. Ask any man who isn't a florist and
he'll agree with that. For most men, it doesn't matter
what the occasion is. They are so intimidated when it
comes to selection that whether it is for mom on Mother's
Day, or for your significant other on Valentine's Day
or birthday
.most of the time guys go with
"old reliable"
..roses. Even we fellows
at FlowersandCakes.com often fall into that trap.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with sending roses.
They are beautiful, smell lovely, and there is even a
"status" type of impression assigned to them.
When you send red roses to your girl, it has always been
my understanding that you are telling her you love her.
If you want to be a little more understated than that,
send white roses or pink roses.
But it would be nice if there was a handy guide on what
sort of flowers/bouquet is most appropriate for a specific
occasion. Perhaps a list or a menu where one is instructed
to send "this" for funerals or "that"
for a thank you gift. Some sort of instruction that can
tip off a cad like me by imploring, "Do NOT send
these flowers to a sick person. It would be tasteless
and reprehensible!"
We at FlowersandCakes.com would like to offer up at least
a couple of suggestions toward that goal.
When it comes to weddings, the couple usually takes care
of all of the flower selections themselves. The bride
wants to make sure the bouquets go well with her bridesmaids'
dresses. And weddings can have certain themes as well.
Perhaps the couple is going with a "pink wedding"
or a "blue wedding". Or maybe they are getting
married close to the holidays and are aiming for a "Christmas
wedding" theme. Because weddings are all about the
celebration of love, roses still can be an integral part
of the bouquet.
For a "pink" wedding, you may want to go with
pink gerbera daisies, pink roses, hydrangeas, and white
calla lilies. Note that pink hydrangeas have a lot of
green to them. Because they are a bush flower, it is common
to have lots of green in the blooms.
For a "blue" wedding, you may want to go with
hydrangeas, roses, cornflowers, muscari and delphinium.
If it is a Christmas/holiday themed wedding, perhaps the
couple would want to consider Ming foliage. It lends a
Christmas atmosphere to a design of roses and alstromeria.
Other options include Gloriosa lilies, different varieties
of red roses, and bupleurum greens.
When it comes to a funeral or sending flowers to a sick
friend, lilies are often the most popular selection. But
carnations, chrysanthemums, and gladioli are also appropriate
choices. They convey a message of sympathy and remembrance.
When it comes to a thank-you bouquet or a congratulatory
selection, tulips, daisy pompons, Gerbera daisies and
alstroemeria are all very acceptable choices. You typically
want a "thank you" or a "congratulations"
gift to be bright and cheerful with lots of yellow and
orange.
As we've discussed previously, there is no incorrect occasion
to send someone flowers. Even if you just want to tell
a person you are thinking of them, flowers is a "can't
miss" gesture. Just don't limit yourself to thinking
roses are the only way to go. Most florists should be
able to guide you to a glowing, beautiful bouquet. There
may still be a strong presence of roses to it. But there
are so many other gorgeous options. Do some homework first.
Consult with your florist.
The right arrangement for the right occasion is a wonderful
gift to bestow upon someone you care for. Don't blow it
now !
